POLISH LIGAWKA
Jessica Smith
LIGAWKA

This instrument, belonging to the Aerophones class of musical instruments, was originally used by shepherds for calling cattle and in some cases, it was used for timber transporting barges. Traveling from the eleventh century, (when it was first created), to the ninetenth century, the Ligawka became a very important religious instrument. These different religious cermonies in which the Ligawka was and is still played, would be the ceremonies of advent, the early morning mass, and during the feast of transfiguration.

Men and women are able to play the ligawka for calling cattle, as well as for the well respected religious ceremonies and festivals. However, traditionally, you will see men playing and making the instrument, rather than women; almost like the unspoken rule of thumb. Today, women can be seen performing the religious cermonies, along side of the men, usually husband and wife. Children learn the traditions associated with the Ligawka and perform in all modern day festivals and many religious ceremonies.

Here are some other types of scenarios you will see the Ligawka being played or used: (Signal Instrument)
